Summer in Qingcheng Mountain is composed of gentle breezes and green leaves

Most people only have one concept of summer: scorching heat. Stifling, humid, and suffocating. Yes, Chengdu in July and August is indeed like that, but Qingcheng Mountain is completely different.

Leaving the city and entering Qingcheng Mountain, the air seems to change. The concrete jungle is replaced by green trees, the hustle and bustle fades away, the temperature drops, and a refreshing breeze arrives.

MistPanda will take you to experience a different kind of summer in Qingcheng Mountain!

Why is summer in Qingcheng so different?

The secret lies in the forests. Sichuan's terrain is a combination of basins and mountains. Chengdu is hot because it's located in a basin, where heat accumulates and has nowhere to escape. But Qingcheng is at a higher altitude, with lush, verdant trees. For centuries, dense ancient trees have shaded the mountain paths.

On a July afternoon, strolling along the front of the mountain, sunlight filters through bamboo groves and ginkgo leaves, casting dappled shadows—refreshing and pleasant. The mountain paths under the shade of the trees are cool and comfortable, the air humid but not stuffy, the perfect level of moisture keeping the skin refreshed.

Listening to the wind mingling with the chirping of cicadas and birds, there's none of the usual summer noise; instead, it brings a sense of tranquility. Even the midday sun, filtering through layers of foliage, only provides a gentle warmth, devoid of scorching heat. You're completely immersed in the cool shade woven by the forest—this is summer in Qingcheng.

The main path winds through the forest, almost traversing the entire mountain climb. Jianfu Temple sits nestled beneath towering trees. The trail from Yuecheng Lake to the cable car station is lined with shady bamboo groves. Even Tianshi Cave at the summit is shaded by trees for most of the afternoon.

Setting off around 7 or 8 am, the quiet trails offer the coolest temperatures, with joggers greeting you and a vibrant experience of Qingcheng Mountain. By midday, when you reach Laojun Pavilion, the sun is high in the sky. Standing at the highest point, the sunlight is warm but not scorching.

If you're worried about the heat, you can take the cable car up and then walk down. This way, you can enjoy the sun-drenched sections in the morning and walk in the shade in the afternoon.

Hear the Stream Crash on Qingcheng Back Mountain

Most of the trails on the back mountain follow a stream. In summer, the stream is swift and the water level is high. You'll hear its sound before you see it—a constant, deep murmur echoes from Tai'an Town all the way to Baiyun Temple.

The trail hugs the stream. Every few minutes, you'll pass a small waterfall or pool where the stream flows gently. The mist from the waterfalls brings a refreshing coolness. The trees are lush and leafy, blocking out the sun for hours on end.

Every breath carries the fresh scent of grass and wild berries, a faint earthy fragrance filling the lungs, sweeping away the gloom accumulated throughout the season. Walking slowly along the stone path, the bushes beside the path are adorned with dewdrops that haven't quite dried yet. A breeze sweeps across the leaves, sending down a shower of cool, ticklish drops that tickle the ankles. There's no city noise, only the soft fluttering of mountain birds' wings and the tinkling of the stream crashing against the stones, each sound carried far away by the wind. Even the pace slows down, and one simply wants to walk along the valley forever, immersing oneself completely in the morning light of the mountains.

Most guides recommend visiting Qingcheng Mountain in spring or autumn. These two seasons are indeed beautiful—that much is certain.

Each season offers a different yet equally beautiful view of Qingcheng Mountain. If you can tolerate slightly damp weather and don't mind afternoon showers, then summer might be the best time to visit. This isn't because the weather is perfect, but because Qingcheng's natural beauty shines through more intensely at this time.

One season at a time, MistPanda will help you find your way to the misty mountains.
