Today we'll introduce you to a fulfilling journey through the front of Qingcheng Mountain. This is where the Taoist temples are. Ancient halls sit tucked into misty forests. Stone paths wind past thousand-year-old trees. And at the top, a panoramic view of Sichuan awaits.
The Front Mountain is easier to hike than the Back Mountain, better marked, and packed with the most important historical sites.
Representative of Taoist culture in the front mountains of Qingcheng Mountain

The Front Mountain of Mount Qingcheng is the living heart of Taoist culture in China. This is where it all began — over 1,800 years ago, the first Taoist master, Zhang Daoling, founded the Way of the Celestial Masters here. Walking the stone paths today, you follow the same steps as ancient monks through misty forests, past ancient ginkgo trees, and into quiet temple courtyards where incense still burns.
Explore sacred sites including Tianshi Cave, where Zhang Daoling once taught and cultivated; Shangqing Palace, a former imperial retreat with calligraphy from emperors; Jianfu Temple, the peaceful first stop after the mountain gate; and Laojun Pavilion, standing at the 1,260-meter summit.Ancient ginkgo trees, cave temples, and centuries-old halls make this mountain a true Taoist treasure.
How Long Does It Take to Hike the Front Mountain?
Hiking the Front Mountain of Mount Qingcheng takes 3 to 7 hours, depending entirely on whether you use the cable car. A full hike up and down — no cable car, just stone steps and temple stops — takes 5 to 7 hours. This is best for experienced hikers who want a full workout. The most popular option is taking the cable car one way (either up or down), which takes 4 to 5 hours and saves your knees while still seeing every major temple. Families or visitors with limited time can take the cable car both ways, finishing in 3 to 4 hours. This still requires walking between the cable car stations and the summit.
Even the shortest route requires climbing a certain number of steps, so it's essential to plan your time and prepare before setting off.

MistPanda recommended routes
MistPanda recommends that you or your friends or family hike up the mountain and then take the cable car down.Start at the main entrance, walk past Jianfu Temple and Yuecheng Lake, then begin the uphill climb. The stone steps take you through Chaoyang Cave, the narrow Throw-the-Brush Gorge, and the ancient Tianshi Cave — where Taoism was founded over 1,800 years ago. Continue ascending to Shangqing Palace, then push on to Laojun Pavilion at 1,260 meters. From the summit, enjoy a 360° view of misty peaks stretching across Sichuan. When you're ready to descend, walk back down to the cable car station (about 15–20 minutes from the summit) and ride down. This route saves your knees from the hardest downhill steps while still giving you the full temple experience. Total hiking time is about 4 to 5 hours.
